I have practiced professional
counseling since September 1997 when I joined Houston Baptist University (HBU)
in their counseling center and later became Director of Counseling Services. He
is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) as well as an LPC Supervisor (LPC
S).
I attended SHSU and received my Bachelor of Science in 1996 from HBU where I
double majored in Psychology and Christianity achieving Magna Cum Laude honors.
I also earned my Master of Arts in Psychology also from HBU in 1999 where I
achieved Summa Cum Laude honors.
I believe that effective therapy happens within an authentic therapeutic
relationship, and it isn’t the job of the therapist to make change happen but
to create the relational environment where desired change is highly likely to
occur. Clients will experientially discover—not just intellectually
understand—the insights, meaning, purposes, and identities that are at the root
of why these “unwanted”, “problematic” symptoms continue to persist. My goal is
to set up the conditions where clients will not only begin to experience temporarily
relief and “feel better” (state change), but also experience enduring freedom/change and “be better” (trait change).
In addressing trauma with my clients, I have extensive, advanced training in
utilizing Trauma Resolution Therapy (TRT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and
Reprocessing (EMDR). Not only is EMDR a first choice therapy for treating PTSD
and trauma, but it has also demonstrated to be extraordinarily effective with:
panic disorders or “anxiety attacks”, social/performance anxiety, identifying
and strengthening resourceful states/traits or peak performance, and substance
and behavioral addictions like sex addiction.
In addition to my counseling
specialties, I have advanced training and specialization in conducting
comprehensive cognitive, clinical and educational assessments/evaluations, in
which I diagnose cognitive and academic disorders, identify strengths and
weaknesses, and provide academic, work and career counseling recommendations
for conditions such as: ADHD, learning disorders such as reading (Dyslexia) and
math disorders, personality disorders, and emotional and behavioral disorders. I
primarily assess children (6-7 years and up) and adolescents in various school
districts: FBISD, SBISD and KISD. In addition, I also specialize in conducting
these comprehensive clinical, cognitive and achievement assessments with young
and older adults.
