While
attending Stephen F. Austin State University, in the beautiful Piney Woods, my first
degree was in education. The second
degree was my masters, in Guidance and Counseling in 1982. I became aware while teaching the learning
disabled that many students were so distracted by emotional adjustments that
they were losing time in the educational process.
I work with
Children, Adolescents and Adults in multiple areas. Many clients are adjusting
to new situations, while others are seeking a diagnosis to clarify behaviors
that are concerning them. I enjoy working with people who want to effect a
change in their lives. Those who are
trying to go the next step by changing their perspective about their place and purposes
in God’s will.
My interest
in children and parenting lead me to complete Foster/Adoption licenses
training, from the state of Texas. The joy of being a part of the adjustment of
children to their new families is immensely rewarding. I encourage all ages of
parents and grandparents to learn about “Parenting with Love and Logic”. I have
been trained in play therapy and in my counseling with children, I often
involve the family. I believe young children often use toys and play as
expressions of their feelings and that parents maintain structure and shape of
a child's world of experiences.
My most
recent training is in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
This is a thoroughly researched method of decreasing the emotional impact of
major and minor trauma. It can also be
utilized to increase feelings of security, self esteem and well being.
My approach
to counseling is that God created a multitude of personalities and
circumstances to assure us that we are unique, and meant for a special journey
in His love and care. I feel that it is a privilege to be included in my
clients' search for a full life in Christ. Through God directed choices, prayer,
planning and self-discipline, we are able to receive the joy that arrives with
self actualization.
