Prior
to working as a Professional Counselor (LPC) I taught bilingual (Spanish) third grade for
nine years and worked as a school counselor for four years. Since leaving Public Education, I have worked
in community mental health, psychiatric hospitals, and other mental health
venues.
I
began working at HCCC in 2004. My
practice includes children (ages 5 and above), adolescents, adults, families, and
clinical supervision for LPC interns. In my work with children and adolescents
I like to look at and treat the family dynamics. This means family members taking
responsibility for their part of the problem. Because of my history of working
in public schools, I am often able to help parents in their negotiations with
school staff. In addition, I enjoy
working with men (adolescents and adults) with issues specific to them. Such issues may entail unresolved problems
with a father/mother, sexual addictions, unwanted same sex attraction, and male
survivors of sexual abuse.
It
is my belief that all problems at their core are relationship problems. Because of this, it is essential to heal and
grow the most important relationships we have with God, family, self, and
others. This is what brings about the
resolution to the problems people encounter.
The process of getting to this goal can be quite difficult at times. So, I commit to stand by and with anyone who
wants to engage the process.
Rather
than using “talk therapy” alone, I like to use other techniques that include
but are not limited to: Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR),
Theophostic type prayer, and experiential therapy. I also give homework assignments to do
between sessions.
I
earned a BA in Elementary Education from the University of Findlay
(Ohio) in
1986, and an M.Ed. in Counseling from Prairie View
A&M University
in 1994. I became fully licensed as a
Professional Counselor (LPC) by the State of Texas in 1998. Outside of work, I am involved with my church
and enjoy day hiking.
